THEATRE AND TRUTH by Ani Vaseva
This book reflects on and presents in critical perspective problems such as Brecht’s alienation effect, the natural in Stanislavski’s ideology, possibility in Artaud’s texts, Meyerhold’s biomechanics, how theatre is play according to Schechner, why roles are spectres according to Coqueline etc. Concepts such as “reality”, “acting”, and “illusion” are examined in light of the theses of philosophers who are key to understanding theatre theory, such as Diderot, Lessing, Goethe, Hegel, Schiller, and Schelling. Special attention is paid to phenomena such as “realistic theatre”, “conditional theatre” and “political theatre”, to contemporary theory and practice in the field of theatre, as well as to the specific case of “performance”. Theatre and Truth offers original thesis on the seminal for the history and theory of theatre problem of the Truth.
