ANI VASEVA

Ani Vaseva (Sofia, 1982) is theatre director and researcher. Co-founder of Metheor. Assistant professor at New Bulgarian University, Sofia. Since her graduation from the National Theatre Academy in Sofia in 2009 she has directed more than twenty theatre productions. Part of her theatre texts have been published in Metheor.Collected Theatre Texts  in 2018.

Vaseva is also a theatre and dance scholar, academic teacher and translator. In 2007 she published the book What is Contemporary Dance, based on her PhD thesis (she received her PhD degree from Bulgarian Academy of Science in 2014).In 2020 was published her book Theatre and Truth, in 2022 – Metheor. Theatre of the Impossible, and in 2023 – Theatre of Miracles. She has translated in Bulgarian Joseph Campbell’s Eastern Mythologies (2004), Jonathan Burrows’ Choreographer’s Handbook (2017) and H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dreams in the Witch House (2022).

Ani Vaseva is co-director of Hollins Dance MfA Program Summer European Semester (Hollins University, VA) since 2023. Since 2014 she has been guest-professor at the Theatre Department, New Bulgarian University. Between 2015 and 2018 she has been teaching history and theory of theatre and literature at Theatre College Lyuben Groys, where she was also an acting professor, leading acting class 2017-2018, together with Leonid Yovchev. In the last decade har articles have been published in various editions and she has been giving public lectures in major cultural institutions in Sofia, Vienna, London, Berlin, Zagreb etc.

Her theatre work and her work in the visual arts has been presented in ACUD Theater, Berlin; Gallus Theater, Frankfurt; TanzQuartier, Wien; Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto; < rotor > Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Graz; Steirische Herbst, Graz; Whitechapel gallery, London; Sofia City Gallery, Vaska Emanouilova Gallery, Rayko Alexiev Gallery, Structura Gallery, National Palace of Culture, Lumiere cinema, Home of Cinema, swimmingpool and the fridge, Sofia, among others. As producer in Metheor she has accomplished vast amount of theatre productions as well as publication projects, educational projects, local and international collaborations etc.
